Boosting engineering excellence through Rookie boot camp internship and DOCKYARD platform
Jovana Romčević
Product Manager
In the tech world, there is a recurring debate: how do you prepare new talent for the rigors of a real client project? At ProductDock, we found the answer within our own walls. We call it the Rookie boot camp(RBC), which is the foundation for DOCKYARD, a living ecosystem that serves as both our internal operational backbone and the ultimate training ground for our interns.
As a product manager with a UX background, I’ve had the privilege of shaping this platform and knowledge-sharing culture. It is much more than a suite of apps; it is where our culture of systematic mentorship meets engineering excellence and satisfies user needs.

The evolution of DOCKYARD and the two-click goal
DOCKYARD didn’t start as a grand platform. It began with a very human need to optimize. Years ago, requesting a vacation or an education budget was an administrative marathon. It meant multiple communication channels, unsynchronised team calendars, several decision-makers, complex legal regulations, and a high risk of human error.
We saw this “administrative friction” as a perfect engineering challenge for our rookies. We tasked them with turning these messy, manual processes into seamless digital flows.
- The “Before”: Processing a request could take hours, or even days of back-and-forth communication.
- The “DOCKYARD Standard”: Today, complex calculations (from vacations to business trips and regional per-diem costs) can be done in just two clicks.
By hiding immense complexity behind an intuitive interface, our interns learn the most important lesson in product development: the user should never see the struggle. |

Mirroring of a real client environment and a systematic mentorship
When an intern joins the Rookie boot camp, they are not “just practicing.” They are integrated into a professional work environment that perfectly mimics our work with global partners:
- Agile rigor: Rookies don’t just write code; they are immersed in agile rituals and tools such as Jira, Daily Stand-up meetings, refinement sessions, and User Stories. They manage their time, participate in sprint planning, and conduct retrospectives.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration: Our interns work in teams where designers, developers, and product owners must align. They learn to negotiate requirements and communicate technical debt, all conducted in English, fully preparing them for international consultancy.
- Built on a production-grade technology stack: DOCKYARD is not a prototype or a lightweight internal tool. It is built on a modern, production-grade technology stack using TypeScript with Angular on the frontend and Java with Spring Boot on the backend. The platform is containerized with Docker and runs on AWS-hosted infrastructure, including EC2, RDS, ELB, CloudFront, CloudWatch, and S3.
Security is handled through Keycloak, while the delivery process is supported by CI/CD pipelines implemented with GitHub Actions. This setup allows us to validate architectural decisions, deployment practices, security patterns, and operational workflows in a real business environment before applying similar approaches in client projects.
The true magic of DOCKYARD is the systematic exchange of knowledge. Our senior engineers and UX specialists act as “guardians of quality”. Through rigorous code reviews and design critiques, rookies absorb years of experience.
“Participating in the RBC as a mentor was one of the most fulfilling and challenging things I did throughout my career.
While this program was valuable for the interns themselves, giving them a glance of the industrial environment, approaches, and standards – a piece of a puzzle that is missing in formal education, it was of great value for me too.
During the process, I felt I had learned much more than the participants themselves did – different people demand different approaches; they have different interests in technology, and their skills vary, so not everybody has the same strengths and weaknesses. Balancing out technical requirements, while giving out the right amount of guidelines and hints, gave me an understanding of what leading a team is actually about – not just extensive communication and collaboration between people, but also giving the right person the right task.”
Ladislav Milunović,
Tech lead and a mentor at the Rookie boot camp
“RBC was a valuable experience for me, as it provided a strong foundation for working in a professional environment while also simulating real-world projects. This made it much easier to adapt later, when working on actual projects, since I already had a clear understanding of workflows, expectations, and team collaboration.”
Milica Koprena,
Software developer and a mentee at the Rookie boot camp
More than a platform: A cultural foundation
By starting with a “simple” task of optimizing internal administration, we’ve created a powerhouse for learning.
By treating our internal processes with the same engineering rigor we provide to our clients, we’ve created a culture where learning is continuous, and work is meaningful. Whether you are a rookie writing your first production-grade component or a senior architect testing a new AI service, DOCKYARD is the playground where we build the future of ProductDock, one click at a time.
DOCKYARD is our “pet project” because we all built it and use it every single day. It represents our collective evolution, where we store our knowledge, procedural standards, and our commitment to each other’s growth, adaptability, and long-term thinking.
“There is something special about building the tools you are using every day. To me, Dockyard is a living product that grows with us. From a product manager’s perspective, it is the perfect preparation ground because it challenges us to solve real employee pain points with the same excellence we provide to clients. It’s been amazing watching this “baby” mature into a powerhouse that truly meets our team’s needs.”
Anja Šolak,
Product manager at ProductDock and a user of Dockyard
